Delicious word of the day — “epiphany”

It’s just past 8:00 on a Thursday night and a naughty girl would be stumbling out of a happy hour that lasted a couple hours too long right about now. Instead, I was on the receiving end of a batch of potato soup that my sympathetic neighbor made for me, which is going to be the remedy I’m looking for. I can just tell. I couldn’t get in with my doctor today, so I decided to take a long hot bath, visit my lovely chiropractor Dr. Mary, eat a little pasta washed down with some potato soup, and pop a Vicodin. If carbs don’t help me, a potentially addictive narcotic will do. Actually, I think a good night’s sleep is going to be the most beneficial, so I’m heading that way in a minute.

I have an announcement to make — I have a date for Friday night. Yes, I fell off my Mark Kevin horse and I’m climbing back on my as-of-yet-unnicknamed horse and I’m going on a real movie date. And I’m going to make him buy me buttered popcorn AND Milk Duds AND my own diet Pepsi. There’s nothing more exciting that I can think of at the moment than putting a handful of hot buttered popcorn in my mouth followed by a chocolatey-delicious dud of milk and chewing it all up together. And to top it all off, I’ll have a man sitting there beside me while I do it. Movie dates are so cool. I think we’re going to go see “Juno.” I wonder if he’ll try to hold my hand…I hope he waits until I finish my popcorn and Milk Duds. That’s the type of eating that requires a  little double-fisting and I cannot be distracted.

Okay, I just read over this diary entry and I had to correct about a zillion typos because the Vicodin or the potato soup is kicking in. I  don’t know which one won, but I’m going to bed.

  7. Leek Potato Soup
    Recipe courtesy Alton Brown, 2005
    Show: Good Eats
    Episode: Sprung a Leek
1 pound leeks, cleaned and dark green sections removed, approximately 4 to 5 medium
    3 tablespoons unsalted butter
Heavy pinch kosher salt, plus additional for seasoning
14 ounces, approximately 3 small, Yukon gold potatoes, peeled and diced small
    1 quart vegetable broth
    1 cup heavy cream
    1 cup buttermilk
    1/2 teaspoon white pepper
    1 tablespoon snipped chives

Chop the leeks into small pieces.

In a 6-quart saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Add the leeks and a heavy pinch of salt and sweat for 5 minutes. Decrease the heat to medium-low and cook until the leeks are tender, approximately 25 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Add the potatoes and the vegetable broth, increase the heat to medium-high, and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to low, cover, and gently simmer until the potatoes are soft, approximately 45 minutes.

Turn off the heat and puree the mixture with an immersion blender until smooth. Stir in the heavy cream, buttermilk, and white pepper. Taste and adjust seasoning if desired. Sprinkle with chives and serve immediately, or chill and serve cold.
